Moroccan Lizard Lamps

The lizard as an apotropaic device has already been mentioned in connection with the lizard mirror. Lamps, in and of themselves, are apotropaic as they shine the light which keeps away demons. In Northern Africa, it has been recorded that nobody will sleep in a house without a lamp or light on. Only the poorest, who couldn't afford lamp oil, would go to sleep without a lit lamp. That said, lamps themselves aren't of great interest to us here, except when we see another apotropaic element included, as in the lizard, for instance.

These lamps were photographed in the Moroccan crafts store Marrakech Express. I am extremely grateful to the store for letting me photograph everything in there.
